Self Help: The Art of Compassion

The one area we must win in is relationships. Above all else, what we are really seeking is love.

One of the most important elements of love is compassion, which is the desire to alleviate the suffering of another.

Compassion springs from empathy, which is the ability to imagine--with feeling-- the trials and tribulations of others.

Often, the best way to understand a concept is to grasp its opposite. Here are actions that indicate lack of empathy:

  • Inappropriate selfishness: not considering others' preferences regarding leisure activities, meals, child-rearing, etc.
  • Criticizing. Criticism hurts other people deeply, especially when done in public.
  • Discrimination. All forms of racism and bigotry are a sign of extreme lack of empathy.
  • Self-absorption: the inability to give others the spotlight in conversation and listen to them.
  • Yelling, name-calling, and making hurtful comments or jokes that cause others shame.
  • Forgetting to compliment others for their efforts and unique qualities.
  • Neglecting to celebrate the achievements of others, including special milestones such as birthdays, weddings, retirements, etc.
  • Neglecting to nurture to people when they experience stressful events such as health, job or relationship problems.
  • Breaking promises or violating expectations at work or home.
Self Help: Mental Toughness Exercise

Select a person you'd like to be closer to. Write down one small thing you can do today to show compassion for him or her, and follow through on it. Then, notice the immediate sense of well-being that follows.

In my newly revised online course, Catapult Yourself to Success Using Mental Toughness, I explain many many strategies for handling complex relationship situations including:

  • How to establish love and respect with people in your life
  • How to stop someone from rejecting you, including divorce
  • How to move people to action at work
  • What to say when you're under the fire of criticism
  • How to neutralize the office bully
  • How to handle moody people, including long-standing relatives
  • How to deliver an effective reprimand
This self help training also reveals:
  • The little known truth about negative emotions
  • The mystery behind procrastination and de-motivation and how to infuse unceasing energy into your life
  • How to remove self-created suffering from your life (even the Dahlai Lama agrees)
  • An Olympic gold medalist's method for programming himself for success and confidence
  • Why positive thinking is overrated and how you can move through inner barriers of fear
I'd love to see you in my training.
